U-17 C Hurling Championship Final
Ballinderreen 1-13 Vs Abbeyknockmoy 2-10
In a game played in very difficult conditions, a free scored by Tom Monghan deep in injury time brought the U-17 C hurling final to a replay on Sunday.
Ballinderreen played with a strong breeze in the first half as both teams struggled to adjust to the elements. Matthew Fox, a late replacement for Abbeyknockmoy, opened the scoring in the fifth minute and scored again in the seventh after Kevin Cassidy scored a point for Ballinderreen.
The game continued in a nip-and-tuck fashion. Points from Tom Monaghan (free), Harry McTigue, Eoin O’Regan and Luke Molloy were answered by scores from Darrah Brogan and Cody Morrissey (free and 65). Liam Bailey (14 minutes) and Ross O'Dowd (17 minutes) were introduced during this period to take advantage of the elements.
After Tom Monaghan scored his second free in the 23rd minute, Ballinderreen led 0-6 to 0-5. From the resulting puck out, Abbeyknockmoy broke through the Ballinderreen defence to allow Kyle Moran to score the opening goal of the game.
Luke Molloy replied with a point from play and further points from Tom Monaghan (free), David McDonough and James Allen meant that Ballinderreen led 0-10 to 1-5 at halftime. However, this lead was preserved by an outstanding save by Cathal Leyne.
Abbeyknockmoy displayed their goal threat again in the second half. A shot flashed wide in the 31st minute and some excellent defending from Eamon O'Mahoney prevented another goal chance in the 35th.
The first score of the second half came in the 39th minute. Harry McTigue showed great touch and composure to control the ball and his pass allowed David McDonough to burst through the Abbeyknockmoy rear guard and score Ballinderreen's only goal.
Disaster struck almost immediately as Matthew Fox sent in a speculative shot from the right wing that was caught in the wind and dipped just under the crossbar. This started a period of 10 minutes where Ballinderreen were outscored 1-5 to 0-1 with Ross O'Dowd scoring the solitary point.
Ballinderreen brought on Jamie Cooke (40 minutes) and Sean Hession (48 minutes) to stem the tide. When Matthew Fox scored Abbeyknockmoy's final point in the 51st minute, the score stood at 1-11 to 2-10.
Abbeyknockmoy began to retreat into their half as they used strength in numbers and the elements to frustrate the Ballinderreen forwards who were finding it difficult to score against the wind.
A long delivery from Liam Bailey was caught by Sean Hession whose shot was saved by Mark Joyce in the Abbeyknockmoy goal. Luke Molloy scored a point from play in the 56th minute to leave the minimum between the teams.
The game was delayed for a number of minutes when Eamon O'Mahoney required treatment after he was injured in a tackle that resulted in a straight red card for Matthew Scanlon.
With the extra man, Ballinderreen piled on the pressure and was rewarded when an Abbeyknockmoy defender was called for over-carrying. Tom Monaghan made light work of the pressure and the conditions to sweep the ball between the posts and the game into a replay provisionally scheduled to take place on the 13th of October.
