Bernadette (Bernie) Kelly (née Cardiff)

Ballinderreen Hurling and Camogie Club is saddened to hear of the passing of Bernadette (Bernie) Kelly (née Cardiff) of Kilcolgan and formerly of Nenagh, Co.Tipperary

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kelly and Cardiff families and the rest of her extended family and friends. 

Bernie will be deeply missed by her daughters Siobhan and Orla, her sons Michéal, Diarmuid, and Padraig, sons-in-law Sean and Gerry, daughters-in-law Mary, Theresa, and Denise. She was a proud grandmother to Sinead, Aoife, Michael, Linda, Liam, Megan, Sean, Colin, Hugh, Ciara, Eoin, Emer, Paul, Beth and their respective partners.

Reposing at Suaimhneas on the grounds of the Church of the Annunciation Clarinbridge (H91HW58) this Wednesday 18th March from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral Mass on Thursday 19th March at 2pm in St. Colman's Church Ballinderreen (H91N611). Burial afterwards in Drumacoo Cemetery.

Congratulations to former Ballinderreen club member Lisa Casserly who was named AIB Club Camogie Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season.

Fundraising Table Quiz

Fundraising, Table Quiz will take place Friday, 27th March 2026, 8pm in Jordan's Bar, Ballinderreen, for gear for our U15 Boys and Girls Féile teams

Goalkeeping Workshop

Our two adult goalkeepers within the club, Michael Kelly and Fiona Ryan, will deliver a Goalkeeping Workshop for all coaches and goalkeepers from U12–U17, as well as any players interested in trying the goalkeeper position.

📍 Location: Astro / Juvenile Pitch

📅 Date: Friday, March 20th

⏰ Time: 6.00–7.00 pm

Workshop focus will include:

• Specific warm-up.
• Shot-stopping.
• Positioning.
• Communication.
• Puckout strategy.
• Distribution.
• Integration into team play.

Nursery

Ballinderreen Club nursery will be starting back on Monday, 23rd March at 5:30pm on the Astro.

These sessions are suitable for boys and girls from age 4 upwards who are looking to have fun and begin their hurling and camogie journeys.

Social Camogie training returns on Tuesdays, in the Astro from 8-9pm

We welcome all existing members to attend, and if anyone is interested in joining, new, returning, or just curious you’ll be very welcome!

Some rules apply: you must be over 25 and not be registered as a competitive player.

Sustainable Club Initiative

Have an old hurl under the stairs or gathering dust in the shed?

We’re collecting used hurls to repair and repurpose for players of all age groups. If you have one to spare, we’d love to put it back into action.

Drop them off at the pitch on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 6pm, or give them to coaches at your own training session

South Galway Athletics

Congratulations to Orlaith Mannion who won gold in the 60m hurdles at the U20 Indoor National Chamionships for the second year in row. She set a new championship and personal record of 8.41 seconds in the final

Ciarán Kelleher broke his personal best by 23 seconds while finishing 4th in the 3,000m walk.

Camogie Mascots

Galway Camogie are providing the opportunity for girls between the ages of 8 and 12 to be selected as mascots for the Senior, U23, Minor and U16 teams throughout the season. Parents enter the competition by filling the form at this link: https://tinyurl.com/52nhp33m

Sport Ireland Survey

Sport Ireland has launched the first ever survey exploring behaviours toward sports officials in Ireland.  

Players, coaches and spectators who have encountered a sports official at a competition/game over the past season are invited to take part in the survey.

The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

Parents Talk with Eoghan Cleary

Eoghan Cleary is a secondary school teacher at Temple Carrig School, Co Wicklow. He is a lifelong children’s rights activist currently advocating for the protection of children in an utterly unregulated online world. He is a member of the Online Health Task Force and serves as a director on the board of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. He is the author of multiple textbooks, a columnist for The Irish Times and Journal.ie and has Masters degrees in Education and International Human Rights Law, among others. He is currently working as an educational expert with the Sexual Exploitation Research and Policy Institute developing and researching the impact of his educational programme on gender stereotypes, media and porn literacy, sexual violence and consent.

The talk is approximately 70 minutes long (excluding Q&A) and is for parents/guardians/carers or those working with children and adolescents. It is not suitable for young people under the age of 16.

Galway GAA Referee Recruitment

Galway GAA is running a recruitment campaign for new referees. Applicants can register their interest by emailing refereesadministrator.galway@gaa.ie.

Club Referee Incentive Programme

As we look to the future of hurling in our county and beyond, we’re concerned about the growing shortage of qualified and available referees. This threatens the sustainability of our sport, and we feel the county board has not done enough to address it in terms of training and recruitment.

To tackle this challenge, we propose introducing an incentive programme within our club to encourage the recruitment of new referees.

Here’s the proposal for all club members, specifically for those starting to referee from 2025 onwards:

- Free Membership: Active referees (and their spouse/children, if applicable) will receive free membership as long as they remain active and officiate in championship games. Referees can start by officiating in juvenile championships and progress to adult matches.

- Free Lotto Subscription: One free annual lotto subscription.

- All-Ireland Final Ticket: A free ticket to the All-Ireland final if Galway qualifies, plus the option to purchase a second ticket.

- Umpires' Ticket: The option for your nominated umpires to purchase one ticket to the All-Ireland final if Galway qualifies.

- Referee Bonus 1: A €500 bonus after you referee your first Senior Hurling Championship match in Galway.

- Referee Bonus 2: A €1,000 bonus after refereeing a Senior Intercounty match (League or Championship).

This programme is designed to support and incentivize new referees while rewarding those committed to officiating at a high level. We believe this will secure the future of refereeing and strengthen our club and county's commitment to the sport.

We encourage all club members to consider this opportunity to help grow the next generation of referees.

ATU Sports Scholarships

ATU Sports Scholarship applications are now open. The ATU Sports Scholarship programme provides supports to talented student athletes to recognise their need to balance both sporting and academic commitments. The sports scholarships include financial benefits of up to €3,000 per annum. Non-financial benefits include free or reduced rate access to sports facilities, access to sports science supports, free sports scholarship gear plus lots more.
